So I haven't been very diligent in updating my brother-in-law Ryan's condition. Last week Ryan was hit by an IED bomb in Afghanistan. Since then he has been transferred to a hospital in Germany where he has been in extremely critical condition with leg injuries, facial fractures, pneumonia and most terrifying, cranial fatty emboli syndrome (FES) which has caused immense swelling in his brain, five times the normal pressure. Because of this, doctors have not been able to stop the medication to allow him to wake up. He has been intubated since last Sunday.
Things have not been looking good at all for Ryan. Mike's parents, David and Lynette, flew to Germany on Friday to be at his side during this horrific ordeal. Since then it has been touch and go with more bad news than good.
But today, some good news, and our humble opinion, a miracle!
Mike's parents were called in to talk with the neurosurgeon their time 7:00 a.m., ( 8 hours ahead) and they were told there was nothing else they could do. His head pressures had continued to increase throughout the night; medication was not working and they were asked what drastic measure they wanted to take.
There was brain activity but they could not get pressures to drop. Ryan was at 39 (normal 7-10) at 7:00 a.m. David asked for some time alone with Ryan and gave him a priesthood blessing. Through the power which he holds he was prompted to tell Ryan that he would be able to be made whole and that he could recover from this.
By 4:00 p.m. their time Ryan’s pressures had decreased to 10, and then they dropped to 7 and they have been that way for the last 3 hours. This is the first time since he's been in Germany that his pressure has been back to normal.
David and Lynette know that Ryan is not out of the woods yet, so they ask for your continued faith and prayers. We have been given a great blessing this day!
Mike and I know the power of the Priesthood is real. We are so grateful for this news, and for amazing families.

Oh my goodness, Karen!!! It is truly so incredible to see the Lord's hand in this whole ordeal. From y'all being able to make that trip (which I know was a sacrifice) so you were there at this time, to priesthood blessings. He is in our prayers, and so are y'all. We love you!!! i am a friend of Danielle's, and i just wanted to let you know that we have been thinking of Ryan and your family. i am so glad to hear that things are looking so much better for him!! we will continue to keep thinking of him, and you!
Oh Karen my heart is breaking. I am full of so many mixed emotions starting from how difficult this is for you all, to how sad, how angry, and then how proud I am of him for serving our country. I will continue to pray for him to improve (and for all his brothers in arms).
We are friends of Michelle and Steve. I just want you guys know that we are praying for his recovery! I called my aunt who lives in california (my cousin and brother are serving right now also) and she has called over 20 temples and put all your family names plus Ryans on the prayer rolls! Thanks for all the pictures of Ryan!! My heart is breaking for you guys but he is a fighter and praying for a full recovery!! So glad that his mom and dad are there holding his hands :)
